On August 25, 2017, Zambian Breweries PLC and Millennium Challenge Account Zambia (MCAZ) together with an array of key stakeholders gathered at Southern Sun Hotel in Lusaka to celebrate two years of the existence of the Manja Pamodzi Initiative. The event, graced by the presence of the Honorable Minister to the Office of the Vice President Hon. Sylvia Chalikosa as Guest of Honor, saw a pledge of continued support from both government and the private sector.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Vice President Inonge Wina, Hon. Chalikosa commended the efforts of the project and called on more partners to join hands with the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) and Zambian Breweries PLC in creating more opportunities in the recycling value chain.
“I am glad to hear that the project has about 400 collectors in the nine areas it is operating. This is good and commendable especially that almost 80 percent of these are women and they have started small businesses,” she further said as she highlighted some notable accomplishments of the project.
Speaking also at the event, Honorable Minister for Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Honorable Lloyd Kaziya congratulated Zambian Breweries for taking the lead on the project. “The communities where the Manja Pamodzi project has been operating in the last two years have seen tremendous positive change. They are cleaner and better”, he said.

Meanwhile, outgoing Zambian Breweries PLC Country Director Annabelle Degroot praised the tireless hard work of the project team in establishing the value chain and working so closely with the collectors.

“This project is so close to my heart and I commend Elaine [Project Manager] for working so hard on this one despite the challenges encountered so far,” she said as she decidedly spoke from the cuff and not from her pre-written speech.
“Elaine has been of great support in ensuring that this project reaches where it is today, and even as I leave I would like to hear positive news about Manja Pamodzi”, she further added.
Further comments of appreciation came from Violet Makina (N’gombe collector), Alarm Mulenga (Chawama aggregator), Harrison Musonda (Chunga aggregator) as well as Kunal Patel, Managing Director of Union Packaging. Union Packaging is a processing company that buys used Chibuku cartons and recycles them into egg trays.
